'Getting close': After Callum Wilson, another Newcastle player is almost over his injury - Sky journalist

Newcastle United have welcomed Callum Wilson back to training after his injury, and he could soon be joined by another one of his Toon teammates.

It was reported earlier this week that Callum Wilson was over his pectoral injury, having been absent since the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies’ number nine is now back in training, and there is a chance he could be involved against Crystal Palace next week. That is a huge boost for Eddie Howe, who has only had one fit striker for the past couple of months. Luckily for him, it has been one of the most in-form strikers on the planet, Alexander Isak.

But getting Wilson back to fitness is great news, during a season in which Newcastle United have had so many injury problems.

Howe still has various players who are unavailable, with Joe Willock the latest to be ruled out for the rest of the season.

Keith Downie says two more Newcastle United players are nearly back from injury

But while Willock is out, Wilson is back. And he could soon be joined by two more players who have endured spells on the sidelines.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who has been speaking about Newcastle’s injury list on his YouTube channel.

“The likes of Nick Pope, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier are all getting close [to returning],” he said.

How long Kieran Trippier has been injured for

In the video, Downie then goes to watch Newcastle train, where Wilson can be seen taking part.

There is no sign of Kieran Trippier or Nick Pope, but it is encouraging to hear that they are close to returning.

Out of the two of them, it feels likely that Trippier could be back sooner, as he continues to recover from a calf problem. It was initially only meant to keep him out of two games, but Trippier has now been absent for Newcastle’s last six fixtures.

It has been a lengthier layoff than expected, so hopefully he returns shortly after Wilson. In a perfect world, they will both be available for Wednesday night’s game against Crystal Palace.

When Nick Pope is expected to return for Newcastle

As for Pope, he has been a major miss. The goalkeeper has been unavailable since December, suffering a shoulder injury in a 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Martin Dubravka has taken his place in goal, and has failed to match Pope’s quality in between the sticks. It has massively hindered the way we defend, with fans crying out for Pope to return.

That is now not far away, with Howe recently stating that the 31-year-old should be back by the end of April.

Two Newcastle players not spotted in Toon training

Also in Downie’s video, he notes that Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar were not involved in training on Wednesday. However, he does not believe this is anything to worry about.

Livramento made his return from injury on Saturday, coming off the bench during the 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

As for Schar, he is Newcastle’s only ever-present in the Premier League this season, and netted his fifth goal of the campaign with a header at the weekend. It capped off an incredible performance from Schar, who kept Son Heung-Min quiet and earned another clean sheet for the Magpies.
