IAEA observers unable to investigate explosion at Zaporizhzhya plant

The Russian management of the occupied Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya has reported another incident involving a combat drone.

Observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stationed on site were informed of an attempted drone attack on Thursday, according to an IAEA situation report.

The observers also heard an explosion themselves, but they were not allowed to visit the site of the alleged incident afterwards, the report said.

Last week, there were several drone attacks on the nuclear power plant near the front line. The plant was not seriously damaged. Moscow and Kiev blamed each other for the incidents.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi recently said in an interview with CNN that it was difficult to assess which country the drones belonged to after they had been destroyed.

"It would be irresponsible of my part [to attribute blame]. This is why what we are saying is, whoever is behind it, stop it," Grossi told CNN.

The IAEA boss said a serious nuclear accident would have serious health and ecological consequences and would benefit absolutely no one.

The facility is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.
