Damning verdict as we rate chances of Rangers’ 27-man squad being around next season

The Rangers squad have some questions to answer with fans growing tired of the same old faces producing the same old results.

The last five Scottish Premiership matches have overseen a near-complete Rangers collapse in the title race with the club’s hopes hanging by a thread.

It’s riled a Rangers support who’ve for too long been let down by the same faces bottling it when it comes to the crunch.

The Gers support will not be satisfied with second place and as Philippe Clement approaches a crucial juncture, the decisions he makes this summer will define his future at Ibrox.

But who stays and who goes in Philippe Clement’s Rangers’ rebuild?

Here, we look at all the names in the 27-man Rangers squad and give them a blue, amber, or red light depending on their status ahead of the summer window.

Rangers Goalkeepers

Jack Butland 🟠

The bonafide Rangers number one has been one of the club’s best players this season but there are potential suitors south of the border this coming summer.

With a Euro 2024 place also up for grabs, Jack Butland is clear he’s focused on Rangers but if the right money lands then the power brokers at Ibrox will be tempted.

For us, it all depends on Premier League interest but we can’t rule out a sale.

Robby McCrorie 🟠

Touted as a future Scotland number one, Robby McCrorie will never reach that level so long as he is perennially warming the Ibrox bench.

An Academy graduate who is now 26-years-old, unless there are assurances over playing time it’s hard to see the goalkeeper signing on for a new deal.

Out of contract in 2025, perhaps the situation depends on what happens with Jack Butland.

Jon McLaughlin 🔴

Out of contract, out of the team, and out of hope for any future at Rangers.

Rangers defenders

James Tavernier 🟠

Given James Tavernier has scored a quite remarkable 24 goals this season, never mind the additional 10 assists, the idea Rangers fans are discussing his exit might seem ridiculous.

But in the big moments against Celtic, the Rangers skipper has once again been found wanting and it is the club’s marauding right-back we look to in moments of adversity.

With yet another title collapse happening on his watch, Gers fans are demanding proper change next season and amid links to Saudi, we genuinely can’t rule out a Tavernier exit.

And we’re not sure how to feel about it.

Ridvan Yilmaz 🔵

Back in January it looked like Turkish international left-back Ridvan Yilmaz was all set to leave Rangers.

As Galatasaray submitted official offers, Rangers were eyeing up alternatives and it looked like the ex-Besiktas star was set to return home after only 18 months.

But since then Ridvan has burst into the Rangers side and made the left-back berth his own, only to be injured on Turkey duties.

If Rangers can keep the left-back fit the future is certainly bright in that position and there will be no-one hurrying the 22-year-old out the door this summer.

Connor Goldson 🟠

Another in the James Tavernier mould, Connor Goldson has been a leader at Rangers ever since his move in 2018.

But with great power comes great responsibility and amid another title collapse, the big centre-back is firmly in Ibrox crosshairs.

Also suffering from a dramatic downturn in form, the defender looks rattled by any physicality or quality and Rangers are now leaking goals under his watch.

There’s still time to salvage things this season and on this might Goldson’s Rangers career depend.

Leon Balogun 🔴

Leon Balogun is a popular member of the Rangers squad and is a popular figure amongst the Rangers support.

But having only signed a one year deal in the summer, the 36-year-old’s contract is up come May.

Rangers fans want fresh faces and one suspects Leon Balogun will fall victim to this, with the defender’s impact on the team increasingly minimal.

John Souttar 🔵

John Souttar at times looks every inch the 27-year-old Scotland international centre-back that we thought we were signing from Hearts.

Composed on the ball, a strong runner and a natural springboard for attacks, at his best Souttar is a modern and commanding defender who does excite the Gers support.

But the centre-back still has a lot to learn defensively and is routinely caught out under the ball.

We’re keeping him around as we believe Souttar still has levels to go and that he’ll be an important part of the team in the seasons ahead.

Ben Davies 🔴

That Ross Wilson sanctioned a £4m deal to sign Ben Davies is one of the most woeful pieces of Rangers business in recent seasons.

And that’s saying something.

The former Preston captain earned a move to Liverpool at his peak but a mixture of time spent on the bench and time spent on the treatment table has flatlined his career.

Picking up a pretty penny in Glasgow, the 30-year-old barely kicks a ball and Nils Koppen simply has to shift him on this summer.

Borna Barisic 🔴

Borna Barisic has potentially came and went for the final time in a Rangers jersey after being hooked against Ross County.

In an abysmal performance which sums up the sheepishness which has negatively impacted Borna’s six year Rangers career, it was not the goodbye fans were hoping for.

You get the impression Philippe Clement would rather not use the Croatian and reports have claimed a deal with Trabzonspor has been struck ahead of the summer.

Leon King 🔵

Rangers academy graduate Leon King hasn’t had a sniff all season but remains one of the club’s stellar young assets.

Linked to the likes of Manchester United only a couple of seasons ago, that harrowing Champions League experience appears to have hindered young Leon’s development.

If Rangers are serious about maximising the kid’s potential then he either needs more first team exposure or a loan move next season.

With homegrown quotas and the like in mind, we’d like to see Philippe Clement put some more faith in Leon next campaign.

Rangers midfielders

John Lundstram 🟠

The best on Earth is barely even the best at Dens Park these days as John Lundstram’s engine drains and the Rangers midfielder’s future hangs in the balance.

Philippe Clement has been clear Rangers want to sign Lundstram on a new contract but fans are beginning to have their doubts.

On a substantial wage, the performances Lundstram and co have been putting in as of late are not good enough and there are doubts the 30-year-old has what it takes to be a winner at Ibrox.

Ryan Jack 🔴

If ever a player summed up Rangers’ persistent injury woes of the last few seasons, it’s Ryan Jack.

The Scotland international faces a race against time to ever play for Rangers again, let alone make the Euros with Steve Clarke’s side.

A dependable option when fit, the 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and currently laid up.

A new deal would be insanity.

Todd Cantwell 🔵

One of the most frustrating players to wear a Rangers jersey in recent seasons, Todd Cantwell has that ability to mesmerise and infuriate in equal measure.

Probably the only Rangers player who kicked a ball v Ross County, Cantwell’s performance against Dundee was verging on pathetic.

This is a player we look to as a match winner and at times we get glimpses of the quality that almost saw the 26-year-old move to Bayern Munich.

Will next season be the year this enigmatic talent finally gets his head in the right place?

Kieran Dowell 🟠

Signed in the summer by Michael Beale, Kieran Dowell is another who has been devastated by injuries this season.

The Rangers midfielder has looked a tidy player in the moments that he has played, but in others he has been another woefully ineffectual English Championship signing.

Playing for Rangers requires a mentality which is substantially different from the mid-table of England’s second flight and the jury is out on whether or not Dowell has it.

Would you miss him if Dowell left this summer?

Mohamed Diomande 🔵

One of the bright lights of Rangers’ season, the signing of Mohamed Diomande on a loan-to-buy in January was one that excited fans.

The Ivorian midfielder is highly-rated and has shown why in his early stint at Ibrox so far.

There are still elements of his game that Dio needs to improve and that’s why he’s at Rangers but so far the signs are promising that we have a top talent on our hands.

Mohamed Diomande isn’t just going to be at Rangers next season, he’s going to be central to how we want to play.

Nicolas Raskin 🔵

There has been some recent confusion about Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin, who finds himself out of the Ibrox side.

Philippe Clement has put it down to competition in the middle of the park but when Tom Lawrence is preferred in a more central midfield role there appears to be an issue.

A Belgian U21 international, we don’t know exactly what’s going on behind the scenes but there’s a reason why Nicolas Raskin has been tipped for the top.

After a season interrupted with injury, let’s see what the kid’s got after a full pre-season with national counterpart Philippe Clement in the dugout.

Tom Lawrence 🟠

Another high-earner at Rangers, we were told that much of last season’s drastic downturn was impacted by an injury to Tom Lawrence.

But after returning to the Rangers team, fans aren’t so convinced of his consistent match-winning quality.

Another player who is blowing hot and cold, Tom Lawrence’s post-injury leeway is increasingly wearing thin and Rangers fans are asking the question.

We reckon he’ll still be around next season but should someone from the English Championship tempt Rangers, perhaps Lawrence would be more comfortable there.

Rangers attackers

Rabbi Matondo 🔵

The Welsh international winger has genuine ability and is one of the few match winners in the Rangers team.

The issue however, as it is for all young attackers, is finding consistency and Rabbi Matondo is tasked with delivering on a regular basis for the Rangers team.

Those flashes of quality are more than enough to convince Rangers fans he deserves a greater opportunity and the time is nigh for the ex-Schalke attacker.

Now 23-years-old, this is a moment Rabbi Matondo must grab and we’re hoping he’ll be a key player heading into the next campaign.

Scott Wright 🔴

When Scott Wright’s name appeared on the teamsheet ahead of the visit of Celtic, the eyebrows if Rangers fans were raised across the country.

The ex-Aberdeen winger has played in some quite astonishing matches for Rangers – including the Europa League Final – but never quite contributed enough.

Hooked at half-time in that game, Scott Wright looked destined to leave Rangers for Turkey last summer and since sticking around has done little to convince fans he’s of the quality required.

Fabio Silva 🔴

Portuguese attacker Fabio Silva started his Rangers career oh so brightly.

Netting a couple of goals, the forward was even out claiming that he wanted to extend his loan stay in Glasgow should it suit all parties.

But over the last few weeks the 21-year-old £35m Molineux hitman has not been anywhere near effectual enough in the final third.

Given the costs involved and the lack of contribution, Rangers will surely look elsewhere.

Cyriel Dessers 🟠

The Nigerian nightmare himself has seen his Rangers dream haunted by a series of big misses.

Cyriel Dessers might have scored 17 goals for Rangers this season but don’t be fooled that the striker has been as effective as he could’ve been.

In a first season defined by missed chances, there are major Rangers doubts surrounding the £5m ex-Cremonese striker.

It will all depend on finances but it remains unclear if the club will persist with Cyriel Dessers next season.

Oscar Cortes 🟠

Rangers looked to have unearthed a gem in Colombian winger Oscar Cortes when they signed him on loan from RC Lens in January.

The 20-year-old looked a bright, industrious and quality addition who could play across the frontline and help bolster our title tilt.

But as is customary for those who play at Rangers, Cortes succumbed to a major injury and will be lucky to kick a ball this season.

Whilst we’d like to see the kid play for Rangers again, splashing out on a post-recovery winger with a dodgy injury history looks a major risk.

Kemar Roofe 🔴

Speaking of injuries, step forward Kemar Roofe.

Signed on a bumper deal from Anderlecht in 2020, the cost of this £4.5m transfer has been monumental to Rangers in a number of ways.

Kemar Roofe has occupied an expensive slot in the squad for years and quite simply has not been available enough to impact the team.

Out of contract in the summer, someone in the Rangers boardroom would be trying to troll us all if they even thought about giving the hitman a new contract.

One ex-Rangers star agrees.

Abdallah Sima 🔵

Abdallah Sima has been Rangers’ best outfield player this season.

And he spent nearly three months of it sidelined.

The Senegalese attacker, 22, is a genuinely top player and Rangers will do well to keep the forward despite murmurs that Sima wants to stay.

Brighton hold all the aces on the 16-goal forward – and a contract option on Sima as it so happens – so let’s just wait and see what happens.

We’ve put Abda blue just out hope more than expectation, especially considering Brighton apparently want £15m.

Ross McCausland 🔵

The young Northern Irishman has been Rangers’ breakthrough player this season and Ross McCausland will be around next season.

Having signed a new contract earlier in the campaign, the winger currently finds himself propping up the bench after having his first-team exposure limited by a horror challenge against Motherwell.

We expect the bulk of Ross’ involvement for the rest of the season will come from the bench but the 20-year-old is firmly in the reckoning for 24/25.

Danilo 🔵

Brazilian striker Danilo was Rangers’ most expensive summer singing at £6m.

The ex-Feyenoord hitman showed why too, with some impressive penalty box striking play in the earlier part of his Rangers career.

But after a fractured cheekbone was followed by a devastating knee injury, Danilo’s maiden Rangers season has been spent in the treatment room.

The stage is set next season for the Brazilian to come into the Rangers team and make an impact but fans have seen this movie before.

Let’s hope the striker’s injury woes will soon be behind him, but no-one is holding their breath.
