32-year-old dropped, Jack Marriott starts: Predicted Wrexham XI v Crewe - opinion

Wrexham travel to Crewe Alexandra this weekend after sealing promotion with an emphatic victory over Forest Green Rovers.

Phil Parkinson has revealed Wrexham will travel the night before in preparation for their clash against Crewe Alexandra.

Promotion celebrations will have lasted a few days but Wrexham will switch their game face back on this weekend to round off their season in style.

The Reds can’t catch Stockport County at the top, though they can finish above Mansfield Town with the pair currently locked on 82 points apiece.

After sealing promotion to League One, Parkinson will be tempted to rest a few of his key first-team stars and unleash some of his fringe players, including Ben Tozer and Luke Young, two veterans nearing the end of their Wrexham careers.

Wrexham injury news ahead of Crewe

Parkinson has been pretty fortunate not to lose many of his key first-team players for long periods this term and that remains the case.

He has most of his squad to pick from against Crewe, although he did provide injury updates on left-back Jacob Mendy and midfielder James Jones.

The former Bradford boss said that although Jones could return from the final game of the season, Parkinson isn’t willing to take any risks on the Scotsman.

Jones has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the 1-0 victory over Notts County in February while Mendy will undergo surgery after going off injured against Colchester United.

Supporters will hope this isn’t Arthur Okonkwo‘s penultimate game for Wrexham. The 22-year-old will leave Arsenal this summer and is set to attract several clubs.

Okonkwo has been phenomenal for the Welsh side, and the back three in front have helped him keep an impressive 13 clean sheets in 34 appearances.

The two mainstays in Parkinson’s defence are Max Cleworth and Eoghan O’Connell while Tom O’Connor‘s return has taken them to the next level.

Ryan Barnett scored for the second game running against Forest Green, with the athletic wing-back keeping his place over Luke Bolton on the right, as James McClean continues on the opposite flank.

A midfield trio of George Evans, Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon has everything you’d want; tenacity, creativity and goals.

Parkinson may be tempted to throw Luke Young into the side for sentimental value but that trio is unbreakable.

As for their forward line, Paul Mullin will be looking to add to his tally of 25 goals this term, including 13 in his last 11 appearances for the club.

The Liverpool-born goal machine usually partners Steven Fletcher or Ollie Palmer, but having scored his first Wrexham goal last weekend, “maverick” Jack Marriott deserves to make only his fourth start since arriving in January.
