‘He deserves’: Pep Guardiola says he should have given ‘exceptional’ player more minutes at Man City

Pep Guardiola has suggested that he should have given one player more minutes at Manchester City before he left.

Having been in charge of the Citizens since 2016, the 53-year-old has seen many players make moves out of the club.

Now though, the Spaniard has highlighted one player who waved goodbye to the Etihad Stadium within the past year and given him some significant praise.

Speaking in his latest press conference, Guardiola had this to say about Cole Palmer and what his situation is now at Chelsea compared to what it was like for him at City.

He said: “Exceptional player, we knew when we were here at Man City. I didn’t give him the minutes he deserves that he now has at Chelsea. Incredible potential.”

The winger made 64 appearances for City’s youth sides before making his senior debut in 2020 during a 3-0 win over Burnley in the Carabao Cup.

He then went on to make 41 first-team appearances for the Blues in total before joining Chelsea in a deal worth £42.5m during the previous summer transfer window.

Just before he left, the Englishman said that his main goal was to play regular football, which he has been doing at the west London club.

In 38 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, Palmer has scored 23 goals and delivered 13 assists.

Now that the 21-year-old has shown exactly what he’s capable of when given the chance to be a regular performer for a top-flight side, this may raise the question behind the scenes at City over whether Palmer could have produced the same sort of performances for his old side if they had kept hold of him and gave him regular game time.
