Clinton Morrison now tells £33m Aston Villa star to retire if one thing happens this summer

Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison has urged one Aston Villa player to retire if one thing happens this summer.

The small matter of the European Championships hones immediately into view upon the conclusion of the Premier League season.

Gareth Southgate’s England are, unsurprisingly, among the favourites to land their first major title since 1966. There have been several false dawns over the past three tournaments. Who knows what would’ve happened had Harry Kane equalised against France in Qatar.

After Villa’s impressive season, several of Unai Emery’s squad will fancy their chances of representing their nations in Germany.

Ezri Konsa, Moussa Diaby, Youri Tielemans, Matty Cash, and Pau Torres will likely represent their countries in Germany.

Another player who should be a shoo-in to represent England is Ollie Watkins. The 26-goal striker has enjoyed the season of his career and should be on the plane to Germany.

However, due to Harry Kane and Ivan Toney’s presence, there’s a genuine chance of the Englishman missing out.

Something Morrison cannot come to terms with.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport, he said: “I would be honest with you. If I was where he is, scoring this many goals, and I didn’t make the Euro squad, I would retire. As simple as that. How can you not make the Euro squad?

“I know people say he is a different centre-forward; he is no Harry Kane. Harry Kane is the number one striker and will play, but if you need a goal he can get you a goal, and I think you always take players who are in form at the moment.

“He is in form and if he continues this form until the end of the season, how does he not make it onto that plane? It’s beyond me.”

Morrison is right; Ollie Watkins has to be in the England squad

Southgate will have to hang his head in shame if Watkins doesn’t feature in his squad.

The Aston Villa star is arguably one of the most in-form strikers in Europe at the moment and adds an entirely different dynamic to England’s attack.

Toney and Kane both deserve a spot in the Three Lions squad, which could see a wide player sacrificed to accommodate Watkins.

Marcus Rashford, for example, has been largely disappointing for Manchester United this season. If the 26-year-old is included and Watkins isn’t, the £33million Aston Villa star will have every right to be frustrated.
