West Ham get very welcome £30m cash injection ahead of busy summer window

With West Ham facing an extremely busy summer transfer window the club’s coffers have been boosted to the tune of £30m.

Technical director Tim Steidten said recently he sees his Hammers rebuild as a five-year project.

The last time he embarked on such a project was at Bayer Leverkusen before departing this time last year ahead of joining West Ham.

The newly-crowned German champions are very much the house that Steidten built.

So West Ham fans should be very excited indeed. Based on his work so far in signing the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez, that anticipation is justified.

Although Steidten did not massively break the bank during his time pearl diving at the BayArena, he will need funds to be able to do his job at the London Stadium this summer.

Excitement for Steidten’s West Ham rebuild

A source close to majority owner David Sullivan recently revealed to Hammers News there will be money to spend in the next window, supplemented by any player sales.

If Man City meet Lucas Paqueta’s release clause, Steidten will have an extra £85m with which to improve the team.

New PSR rules will mean all clubs – not just West Ham – will have to cut their cloth accordingly.

So maximising any potential revenue streams is vital.

To that end the Hammers have been handed a major boost.

Because West Ham have received a very welcome £30m cash injection ahead of a busy summer transfer window.

West Ham get very welcome £30m cash injection

West Ham insider Sean Whetstone has been running the rule over the money the club should make from their run to the Europa League quarter-finals this season.

According to Whetstone, supported by a data and graphics from Football Benchmark, West Ham prize money and home ticket revenue from the Europa League should pass £30m this season.

“West Ham prize money and home ticket revenue from the Europa League should pass £30m this season,” Whetstone said.

“Group stage (£3.17m), Group stage wins (£550,037 win bonuses) x 5 = £2,750,185. Winners in the group stage (£960,361), Round of 16 qualification (£1.04m), Quarterfinal qualification (£1.56m), Total £9,480,546.

“Coefficient bonus £2.41m, TV Market Pool Bonus £11.63m, Sub Total £23,521,657.

“Europa League home official attendances this season so far: Freiburg (group) 48,976, Olympiakos 55,811, Backa Topola 41,374, Freiburg (last 16) 51,014, Bayer Leverkusen 62,473. A total 259,570 tickets sold at an average price of £25 adds another £6.489m Grand Total £30,010,657.”

Timely boost for club coffers

It is of course too simplistic to say West Ham will use that £30m directly on transfers.

But the additional funds will certainly help.

Because it raises the level of expenditure that will be permitted for West Ham under the new PSR rules – which are bringing brought in line with UEFA’s financial regulations.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire recently spoke to Hammers News about what the new rules might mean for West Ham.
