'One of the best': Phil Parkinson hails the performance of surprise Wrexham player v Crewe

Phil Parkinson has hailed the performance of one player after Wrexham secured a 3-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra.

After sealing promotion to League One last weekend, several would have questioned the mentality of the Wrexham players as they travelled to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday lunchtime.

The Reds essentially had nothing to play for and the outcome of the match didn’t matter in the context of their season, but Phil Parkinson‘s men still put in a professional performance to comfortably dispatch the play-off hopefuls.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin rekindled their telepathic partnership up top as the deadly striking duo assisted each other for the game’s first two goals.

Midfielder Andy Cannon, who was hailed as “super” for his performance, then grabbed Wrexham’s third of the match to secure all three points.

Parkinson was pleased with the professionalism his side showed and also hailed the display of one surprise player.

Phil Parkinson hails the display of Wrexham’s Luke Young

Wrexham captain Luke Young made his first start in seven games, last playing from the off in a 1-0 defeat against Tranmere Rovers last month.

The 31-year-old has played a major part in the club’s rise under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, but his involvement has decreased in League Two, starting just 11 times this season compared to 43 appearances in all competitions last term.

Young is approaching the end of his contract at Wrexham which expires in the summer and may have just played his penultimate game this afternoon.

Yet, the former Plymouth Argyle midfielder rolled the back years with his performance, anchoring the midfield like a beast and earning huge praise from Parkinson.

He told Wrexham’s official YouTube channel: “Great for Youngy to come back into the team today, I thought he was one of our best players”.

To come into the side and deliver that display – despite being left out of the previous six matches – just demonstrates Young’s application and professionalism is top notch.

Luke Young’s Wrexham career statistics

It’s unlikely Young will be given a new contract following Wrexham’s promotion, but he’s shown that he’s still a solid League Two player for most sides.

The experienced midfielder would surely have multiple clubs after him in the summer, should he leave the Racecourse Ground.

If the home fixture against Stockport County does prove to be his final game for the Reds next week, he will depart having made an incredible 245 appearances for Wrexham across a successful six years in Wales.

That places him 45th on the list of all-time Wrexham appearance makers, with Young’s potential farewell next weekend sure to be an emotional one.
