'My information': Fabrizio Romano shares what he's now hearing about Thiago Motta, after Liverpool links

Bologna boss Thiago Motta continues to be linked with the soon-to-be vacant managers job at Liverpool.

The former PSG midfielder has been doing a superb job at the Renato Dall’Ara this season, with Bologna looking set to be in next season’s Champions League.

With his contract running out at the end of the campaign though, it looks unlikely that Motta will be there to oversee that.

Instead, perhaps he could be at Anfield. With the Reds reportedly considering a ‘left-field’ appointment, Motta has been put forward as one who could be in the running.

Other top clubs are also in need of a new manager for 2024/25, though. And as the rumours continue to circle, journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest information on Motta’s future.

Fabrizio Romano provides Thiago Motta latest

There’s little question that Motta is set for a coaching career right at the top of the game. Just like Xabi Alonso, the former Barcelona academy graduate is cutting his teeth excellently at one of Europe’s unfancied sides.

Again, mirroring Alonso, Motta spent his playing days at some of the top team in Europe and is familiar with the way elite clubs work.

Unlike the Spaniard though, Bologna’s manager looks set to jump ship at the end of the season. Speaking on The Debrief podcast, Romano claimed that Motta is expected to be on his way next month. Unfortunately, although he’s reportedly been considered, it doesn’t seem like Liverpool is where he’ll land.

“I don’t think he will stay, they are doing something special, something fantastic,” explained the journalist.

“My information is that he’s not staying at Bologna. The expectation is for him to go. Bologna are already looking for a potential replacement as soon as they will receive communication from Thiago Motta.

“My information remains that Juventus are the big favourites to appoint him. There are still some steps to do before calling that a done deal, but for sure the interest is strong from Juventus.”

Could Liverpool seriously step in for Motta

Having become an Italian citizen and played for the Italy national team, it would make sense that the Brazilian born Motta would want to stay in Serie A.

When the biggest club from a manager’s native country get involved, it can be hard to compete with that.

That isn’t necessarily what would put Liverpool off hiring Motta, though. Although he speaks fluent Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and French, he has never played or coached in England. That could be a red flag.

We still think that Motta could be worth pursuing, because he looks like a genuinely special coach. If Edwards and co haven’t made their move yet though, then it seems unlikely that they’ll take it any further.

Unless something big happens, it looks like Motta is off to Juventus.
