'The man they needed': Frank Lampard says Chelsea were crying out for 21-year-old during Man City loss

Chelsea were eliminated from the FA Cup yesterday after losing 1-0 to Manchester City at the semi-final stage.

On another day, it was a game that Mauricio Pochettino‘s men could have easily won.

Chelsea had a lot of good opportunities, with striker Nicolas Jackson responsible for missing most of those chances.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas was extremely disappointed with one opportunity that the 22-year-old wasted in the first half when he tried to round the goalkeeper.

He will have to do a lot better on Tuesday if Chelsea are to beat London rivals Arsenal.

Frank Lampard discusses what Chelsea needed in Manchester City defeat

For Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, it was quite simple what the Blues required yesterday.

The retired England international thinks that the chances that Jackson had needed to fall to Cole Palmer instead.

Analysing the game for the BBC, Lampard said: “I think fans should show patience. They’ve shown good performances against top teams. They did it twice in the league against Man City, they’ve done it today and against Arsenal and against Aston Villa.

“Palmer was the man they needed in front of the goal for those cutting edge chances today.”

Palmer has been fantastic in front of goal for Chelsea this season, scoring 23 times in 39 appearances under Pochettino.

How much did Cole Palmer cost?

Chelsea bought Palmer from yesterday’s opponents during the last summer transfer window.

They paid City an initial £40m fee for the England international and another £5m in add-ons.

It has proven to be excellent business, especially compared to some of the names on Chelsea’s list of most expensive signings of all time.

Palmer cost half the amount of what the club paid for Mykhailo Mudryk but has been 10x the player, for example.

There was not a better deal last summer. Palmer has easily been the signing of the season and now deserves to be in the running for the PFA Player of the Year award.
