'It is not...': Sunderland manager target Danny Rohl now drops fresh hint on his future

Sunderland may have been handed a boost in pursuit of one of their managerial targets.

Sunderland remain without a permanent manager in charge.

Michael Beale was axed in February after a run of just 12 games in charge, with Mike Dodds taking charge until the summer.

But Dodds has been coming under criticism recently.

Sunderland lost 1-0 at home to Millwall on Saturday, leaving the Black Cats in 13th place of the Championship table and with just two wins in their last 13 games.

A lot of Sunderland fans would like to see the club appoint Reims boss Will Still.

The 31-year-old is fancied by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus following his impressive 2023/24 season with Reims, who are battling for a European finish in France.

But Still could cost more than £4million in compensation fees.

Other names linked are former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom and current Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

Rohl has been tipped to be a good fit for the Black Cats having worked with the likes of Bayern Munich and the German national team before taking charge of the Owls in October last year.

Speaking in an interview with The Times recently, Rohl was of course asked about his future in Sheffield.

His Wednesday team are now out of the bottom three after a 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, though they sit just one point and one place above the drop zone.

Rohl said on his Sheffield Wednesday future:

“It is not in my mind right now, but even if you go down, it could be a chance to bring good things together and make a good run, then, when you get promoted [to the Championship], you want to do something like Ipswich has done.

“We need to discuss, to understand the strategy [for next season].”

Kristjaan Speakman may have just been given his Danny Rohl answer

With Rohl discussing Sheffield Wednesday and the next season, and his side winning on Sunday and moving out of the bottom three, it seems like Rohl is certainly keen on staying.

He’s often spoke fondly of the club and of the fans and how he wants to really build something big at Sheffield Wednesday.

And although Kristjan Speakman has hinted in the past that Sunderland could bring in a coach from another team, it still seems like they’re leaning towards another out of work boss, like Heckingbottom.

Rohl continues to impress at Sheffield Wednesday and his comments certainly seem to suggest that he wants to stay, so that could mean Speakman and Sunderland turning their attention elsewhere.

But with two games left there’s still a chance that the Owls go down, which would surely push Rohl towards the exit door.

So for Sunderland, Rohl seems like a name to keep an eye on for sure, but the likes of Heckingbottom still feel more likely.
