‘I think’: Jamie Carragher has theory over what happened in Man United dressing room after FA Cup semi final

Jamie Carragher feels Manchester United’s players will be ‘embarrassed’ after their FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City.

Manchester United secured their place in this year’s final with a penalty shootout win at Wembley on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s men were in complete control heading into the 70th minute after goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes handed them a 3-0 lead.

You’d have been forgiven for thinking the game was all but over after Fernandes’ effort but Coventry had other ideas.

Ellis Simms grabbed one back for the Sky Blues in the 71st minute and Coventry went on to force the game to extra time.

Callum O’Hare netted eight minutes after Simms’ goal and Haji Wright made no mistake from the penalty spot in the 95th minute.

United even rode their luck in extra time as Coventry thought they had secured a stunning comeback win when Victor Thorp netted with just a minute remaining.

Fortunately for Ten Hag’s side, the goal was ruled out due to an offside in the build-up and United prevailed on penalties.

Carragher has theory over Man United dressing room

Following today’s action-packed semi-final at Wembley, Jamie Carragher admitted he cannot see Ten Hag lasting beyond the summer at Old Trafford.

The Liverpool legend also told Sky Sports that he believes United’s players would have been ‘embarrassed’ in the dressing room after today’s victory.

“We were watching at the end there and Mark Robins famously kept a Manchester United manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] in a job. I think that result today has just cost the Manchester United manager his job.

“I don’t see how he stays. It’s just performance after performance. I would imagine that dressing room is the most embarrassed dressing room you could probably remember of a team that’s won a big game.

“Can you imagine that dressing room with everyone just sat there – you don’t know whether to celebrate. Is it a big thing, you’re in the cup final, you’re through.

“They’re probably all just sat there looking at each other. You can’t even celebrate it.”

“It’s different when you talk about a manager in the role compared to a player because a player doesn’t lose his job, he might lose his place in the team,” Carragher added.

“You never want to say a manager should be sacked or lose his job because it’s somebody’s job. But if you were at the top at Man United, what is it about the situation, the team, the manager, his personality that would be making you think ‘he’s going to take us forward next season’. I don’t see it.”

Lack of celebrations sums it up for United

Carragher may have a point here as United’s celebrations were notably modest after Rasmus Hojlund netted the winning penalty.

Antony was quick to celebrate in front of Coventry’s players as the Brazilian cupped his ears following Hojlund’s penalty.

But aside from that, United didn’t exactly look like a side who had reached the FA Cup final.

Of course, that is to be expected after such a stunning collapse following Coventry’s first goal of the game.

Nevertheless, Ten Hag’s men have set up another Manchester Derby for this year’s final and will be hoping to exact revenge after last year’s defeat to City at Wembley.

One thing is for certain, United will have to improve dramatically on today’s performance to stand a chance against Pep Guardiola’s side.
