'Not a great look': Jacob Steinberg says Moyes has nowhere to hide after 3-1 win

Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg hasn’t held back in his criticism of West Ham United manager David Moyes over the past week or so.

West Ham boss David Moyes is under real pressure after yesterday’s 5-2 defeat to Crystal Palace, and Jacob Steinberg twisted the knife in a little further last night.

Steinberg has really been on Moyes’s case in recent weeks, and rightly so. He described the the awfully defensive setup and performance away at Bayer Leverkusen 11 days ago as ’embarrassing’.

And three weeks ago, the journalist criticised Moyes for his decision to bring Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium – labelling the 28-year-old as one of the worst West Ham signings of all-time.

Moyes is clearly a dead man walking now. His archaic ideas have finally caught up with him and he’s been sussed out at the very highest level.

Now even some of his fiercest allies from days gone by are starting to turn on him…

Jacob Steinberg says David Moyes has nowhere to hide

The Guardian journalist is well-known for being a fierce ally of Moyes, and even supported him on his X account after the shambolic team selection and subsequent performance away at Liverpool in December.

He has also criticised some West Ham fans in the past for demanding a more possession based system from Moyes.

And then back in September, Steinberg wrote a piece for the Guardian highlighting how Moyes was continuing to defy his critics in his role as Hammers boss.

Then, at the start of this year, he wrote yet another glowing piece about the Scot, suggesting that the West Ham owners should offer him a brand new deal (Guardian).

So taking all of that into consideration, Steinberg’s change of heart really is quite something.

The Guardian journalist took to his official X account to highlight why Moyes’s excuse for player fatigue is actually a hollow one:

The thing is, I have been banging on about this for the last 18 months now. Whilst Steinberg is spot on, it has to be said it’s strange that it has taken him this long to jump on the bandwagon.

Moyes is well out of his depth at West Ham now in my opinion. He has done a fine job over the past 4.5 years, but it is obvious to see now that he is incapable of taking us on to the next level.

Jacob Steinberg aimed fierce criticism at David Moyes yesterday and now there is a very ominous feeling that his time is done at the London Stadium.

It really is quite sad that his ego and stubbornness has got in the way of him receiving a hero’s send-off.
