Why Andre Onana isn’t suspended for the FA Cup final despite receiving two yellow cards

Why isn’t Andre Onana suspended for the FA Cup final? Find out on United in Focus.

It’s funny, the 2023 FA Cup final was the first time a Manchester derby has featured in a cup final in the English game’s existence, and then the very next year it happened again. Like buses.

But this season, Erik ten Hag will be simply desperate for a different outcome. The Manchester United manager is seeking redemption, this time looking to bring the trophy back to the red side of Manchester.

They’re going to need their strongest squad possible, which is why some were a little concerned when Andre Onana was shown his second yellow card of the game.

Andre Onana received two yellow cards in the Coventry fixture

Some were baffled to not see the Cameroonian shot-stopper walk after unphased he was branded his second yellow of the match in the thriller against Coventry City during the penalty shootout.

The 28-year-old was given his first in the 85th minute for time-wasting, which evidently was pointless given Haji Wright’s 95th-minute penalty.

Onana was then booked again during the shootout, which left a few scratching their heads as to why he wasn’t shunned off the pitch.

Well, this issue has been spoken about prominently this week, with World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez having the same thing occur in the Europa Conference League.

Why Andre Onana isn’t suspended for the FA Cup final

Manchester United goalkeeper Onana was booked in the game, and in the penalty shootout – but the rules state that cards get wiped out before the shootout. This means that Onana won’t be suspended for the FA Cup final.

He says he checked with the referee the rules beforehand – so that he knew he could get away with one in the shootout.

This is a huge relief for Manchester United, with Onana one of the standout performers as of late. He’ll be dually needed if United want to beta their bitter rivals.
