Celine Dion emotionally opens up about living with rare disorder - 'Why me?'

Celine Dion has opened up about living with Stiff Person Syndrome, after announcing her diagnosis in December 2022.

The music icon was forced to postpone her upcoming performances due to a neurological disorder that causes spasms and affects muscles and vocal cords. Despite this, the singer has made several public appearances since, including the 2024 Grammys, where she presented Taylor Swift with Album of the Year. Now, she’s opening up about living with the syndrome, and her one goal for the future.

Celine Dion opens up about living with Stiff Person Syndrome – ‘Why me?’

“I haven’t beat the disease, as it’s still within me and always will be,” the My Heart Will Go On singer told Vogue France. “I hope that we’ll find a miracle, a way to cure it with scientific research, but for now I have to learn to live with it,” she explained.

“At the beginning, I would ask myself: why me? How did this happen? What have I done? Is this my fault? Life doesn’t give you answers. You just have to live it. I have this illness for an unknown reason.”

The 56-year-old explained that she then had two choices. “Either I train like an athlete and work super hard, or I switch off and it’s over, I stay at home, listen to my songs, stand in front of my mirror, and sing to myself.”

The star then revealed she was working on her body “head to toe” with her medical team, and that her goal is “to see the Eiffel Tower again!”

On what helps her the most, Celine revealed that her family and children, plus the love from fans keeps her going.

“I have this strength within me. I know that nothing is going to stop me,” she added.

The star announces documentary premiere date

Amongst all the hard times, the star has been filming for a Prime Video documentary, I Am: Céline Dion which explores the superstar’s iconic career and diagnosis with SPS.

The momentary will be available to stream globally on June 25, so fans only have two months to wait until they can see the star on their TV screens.

As the singer announced the project on her Instagram, fans couldn’t keep in their excitement. “This news has made my day!!!!” exclaimed one.

Another penned: “I can’t wait to watch!!” Neither can we.
