'One thing that can't happen': BBC pundit shares why Willy Gnonto was 'begging' Leeds teammate vs Middlesbrough

A super win for Leeds United saw Daniel Farke’s side beat Middlesbrough at The Riverside on Monday night and throw their name back into the hat for a place in the top two – but it didn’t all go our way.

Boro took the lead through Isaiah Jones and equalised to make it 2-2 – but Leeds finally saw the game out despite a nervy final 10 minutes. Patrick Bamford said the half-time plan nearly worked perfectly.

Indeed, Bamford got his name on the score sheet to put Leeds 2-1 up after Cree Summerville scored a penalty – following a bit of magic from Georgi Rutter. Willy Gnonto put Leeds 3-2 up before half-time.

Summerville got his name on the score sheet again, only for Boro to score their third of the night with a few minutes to play. However, Leeds survived a late onslaught and emerged 4-3 winners on Teesside.

What Jon Newsome said about Crysencio Summerville’s assist

Summerville was in stunning form. He added three more goal involvements on the night, scoring a brace and laying on an assist for Gnonto to score. A huge 30 goals and assists for the 22-year-old this term.

Commentating on BBC Radio Leeds, former Leeds man Jon Newsome was full of praise for the Leeds star – as he slipped in Gnonto to score. He says that kind of pass “kills” a defence, Gnonto “begging” for it.

“He kills them because he can see Willy Gnonto wanting to get in behind. Willy Gnonto is begging for him to play that ball. It kills you. It’s one thing that can’t happen,” Newsome said, on Summerville’s assist.

“As a centre-back, I can’t allow that ball to be played between me and the full-backs, it has got to go across the front of you, otherwise, it kills you, and that just killed them,” Newsome added, on the assist.

How the race for prmootion looks as Leeds beat Boro 4-3…

Leeds are now back in second place after the win over Michael Carrick’s side. A first win four games and just at the right time, just when Leeds needed it most. They have gone above Ipswich, into second place.

The Tractor Boys were not in action on the weekend with Coventry in the FA Cup semi-finals. Of course, Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton have a game in hand – but you would rather points on the board.

All eyes turns to Leicester and Southampton on Tuesday night, while Leeds play before Ipswich do next – meaning the Whites could go four clear of The Tractor Boys before Kieran McKenna’s men play next.
