Tesla is to cut 400 jobs at its only European plant near Berlin, the US carmaker said in a press release on Tuesday, following an announcement to cut 10% of its global workforce.

In order to avoid compulsory redundancies, the company is planning a "voluntary programme" for employees. Talks will be held with the works council to implement this program, it said.

Tesla did not initially provide any details on this.

"The currently weakening sales market for e-cars is also presenting Tesla with challenges," was one of the reasons given for the job cuts.

Last week, the car manufacturer announced that the contracts of 300 temporary workers at the factory in Grünheide, just outside of Berlin, would not be extended.

According to Tesla, the company's contractual partner has already been able to place the majority of the affected temporary workers.

More than 12,000 people currently work at the German plant.

Tesla announced last week that it will cut more than a tenth of its workforce worldwide, equivalent to an estimated 14,000 employees, pointing to a slump in the market for EVs and weak sales worldwide.
