'Absolute machine': Anthony Gordon now admits he has taken inspiration from 31-year-old Liverpool star

Anthony Gordon has taken his game to a whole new level at Newcastle United, having taken inspiration from a Liverpool superstar.

The 23-year-old has been on fire for Newcastle United this season, scoring 11 goals in all competitions and getting nine assists. His numbers have been incredible, and it is why he is viewed as one of the Magpies’ best players for the 2023/24 campaign.

Anthony Gordon has been outstanding, and it culminated in him making his England debut last month. It was a well deserved call up to Gareth Southgate’s squad, and he will hope to be in it for the Euros in Germany this summer.

The winger has really kicked on at St James’ Park, and has improved so much as a player under Eddie Howe. It was a slow start to begin with, but the rate at which he has since progressed has been astounding.

What is more astounding is his mindset. Gordon is incredibly ambitious and driven, and appears to do whatever he can to progress as a footballer and as a person.

That means getting his mindset right before a game, which includes envisioning situations that could happen in a match so that he knows what to do if they become a reality.

It is an interesting way to prepare for a game, and something that is inspired by one of the Premier League’s best players.

Gordon has appeared on The Overlap podcast alongside Gary Neville, and spoke about how he is inspired by Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah.

“I love the mindset of getting myself in that place before I’m already there,” he said.

“I actually heard Salah talking about it. That’s where I took even more interest, because I see him as an absolute machine, a winner. People like that, you’re not going to go far wrong following what they do.”

If you are going to take inspiration from anyone, take it from one of the best. As Gordon says, you will not go far wrong if you are following the lead of someone as talented as Salah.

The Egypt international has been one of the best players in the world in recent years, recording incredible numbers season after season in a Liverpool shirt. He has played 344 times in total for the Reds, scoring 210 goals and providing 88 assists.

Those are numbers that Gordon can dream of replicating, and hopefully he can in the black and white of Newcastle if he continues to study Salah. He has spoke about his admiration for the Liverpool forward in the past, raving about how impactful he is.

You can now say the same about Gordon, as he becomes more and more decisive in the final third. He has already kicked on loads, and there is still so much more to come from a player who has the right mentality to play at the top of the game.
