Five migrants die trying to cross the English Channel

Five more people have died attempting to cross the English Channel, French maritime authorities said on Tuesday, after rescuers came to the aid of the heavily overcrowded boat.

The five could not be resuscitated after they were taken from the water. The victims included a 4-year-old girl, media reports said.

The incident occurred during the morning near the northern French coastal town of Wimereux.

Accidents often occur in these waters as migrants try to reach Britain using small rubber dinghies. The journey is made all the more dangerous by large ships working the route.

In January, five people also died during the attempted crossing.
