Forget Okonkwo: Wrexham must now prioritise a new deal for 'invaluable' ace this summer - opinion

Wrexham will kick start their summer business once the season draws to a close on Saturday. Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is a reported target, but he isn’t the player Phil Parkinson should be prioritising.

Talk of signing Arthur Okonkwo has engulfed the Wrexham fanbase.

The 22-year-old has excelled on loan from Arsenal. He was named in the League Two Team of the Season, has a better save percentage than Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and sees his contract at the Emirates expire this summer.

A flood of clubs will likely tempt him with a move, although executive director Humphrey Ker has confirmed that Wrexham are “desperate” to sign him.

This will be music to supporters ears, who would love for him to remain in between the sticks for their League One campaign, but he isn’t the only priority that Phil Parkinson has on his mind this summer.

Wrexham must prioritise new James McClean contract

In terms of long-term investment, it is easy to see why Wrexham want to sign Okonkwo permanently.

He’s in the embryonic stages of his goalkeeping career but as he’s shown this season, he’s a very talented young goalkeeper whose resale value is likely to shoot through the roof.

Wrexham would do well to get their hands on him permanently, especially with Championship clubs interested, which is why their priority has to be giving James McClean a new contract.

The much-maligned McClean has been exceptional for Parkinson, displaying characteristics that have helped drive the Reds to promotion, on and off the pitch.

Despite recently turning 35, the Republic of Ireland star ranks high in various fitness tests and has played a vital role this term.

Hailed as “invaluable”, McClean has displayed incredible versatility by operating at left wing-back and central midfield while recording more assists in the Wrexham squad than any other player (10).

His impact is undeniable while his wand of a left foot has wreaked havoc in League Two and will continue to do so in League One.

James McClean could retire at Wrexham

Jimmy Mac, affectionately known by teammate Andy Cannon, still has a lot to give at Wrexham.

Although he’s approaching an age where giving him a long-term contract would be suicide, at least a one-year deal would be a wise decision as there are plenty of clubs in the third tier who would take him.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds shocked the footballing world when they captured McClean on a free transfer, and the Irishman deserves to continue his journey at Wrexham.

The veteran utility man has found a home in Wales and for as long as he pulls on the Red jersey, supporters will adore him.

Indeed, if he were to be rewarded with a new contract – which he should be – there’s a possibility he could retire at Wrexham, a potentially fitting end to his illustrious career.
