Report: Celtic look to make important backroom addition as reshuffle continues

As Celtic look to close out the season in style with a league and cup double, important backroom changes continue as the club looks to build for the future.

We told last week how Darren O’Dea was appointed into the new role of Professional Player Pathway Manager as the club looks to develop their youngsters to become important first-team players.

O’Dea was in charge of the Celtic B alongside Stephen McManus and will now report to the Head of Academy Chris McCart and work closely with Brendan Rodgers.

However, it seems the backroom reshuffle is not finished as Rodgers looks to add another name into the mix.

Charlie Mulgrew and Jonny Hayes ‘in the frame’ for Celtic role

According to the Daily Record, Charlie Mulgrew and Jonny Hayes are both in the running to become the Celtic U18s manager after Steve McLaren left the role at the beginning of the year.

Hayes is still part of the Aberdeen playing staff as well as helping out in The Dons academy as well but has become frustrated at a lack of game time.

Mulgrew has carved out a punditry career but is said to be keen on returning to football in a coaching capacity and could see returning to Celtic at U18 level as the ideal opportunity to do that.

Both former players had successful Celtic careers with Mulgrew picking up five league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup during two spells at Celtic.

With the experience both have in the game and how popular the pair were at Celtic during their Parkhead careers, either of the pair would be a good appointment at the club.

But what is really satisfying here is that there seems to be a real urgency by Celtic to focus on the development of youngsters at the club as this has been an areas of real frustration by the fans after losing some top young talents over the years.
