‘Would double their money’: Journalist reckons player Man City sold in 2023 is now worth £100m

Journalist Mark Ogden has suggested that one player Manchester City sold last year is now worth £100m.

During the previous summer transfer window, numerous players made moves away from the Manchester club on permanent and temporary contracts.

Now that the next summer window is on the horizon, one journalist has claimed that someone who City sold last year is now worth more than double the fee they picked up for him.

Speaking in a recent episode of The Tuesday Night Club podcast from 5 Live Sport, Ogden had this to say about Cole Palmer, including his current value and a potential move away from Chelsea.

He said: “Because of the way Chelsea operated and we know they posted losses of around £90m last month, because they have a real fight on their hands to comply with PSR, would any of us by surprised if someone made a big bid for Cole Palmer this summer that they [would sell him?].

“They would double their money at least. They paid £40m for him, Cole Palmer is now a £100m player.

“If you’re Cole Palmer you are looking round thinking I had a great season but is that where the future is, can Chelsea give him what his talent deserves or is there a bigger club who can give him [what he wants?].

“He will want to play in the Champions League, won’t he?

“I don’t know of any interest in Cole Palmer but if someone says here’s £100 million for Cole Palmer would Chelsea’s regime turn it down, I couldn’t say that they would.”

Should Man City have got more money for Cole Palmer?

After working his way through the youth ranks at City and going on to make 41 senior appearances for the club, Palmer was sold to Chelsea last summer in a deal worth an overall fee of £42.5m.

Since then, the winger has had a stunning debut season with Mauricio Pochettino’s side, scoring 25 goals and delivering 13 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

In terms of his current market value, the CIES Football Observatory list Palmer as being worth €100m (£85m) alongside some of Europe’s other top players such as Rodri, Gavi and Florian Wirtz among others.

Despite the 21-year-old having a strong start to his Chelsea career, the fact that the west London club are currently 19 points away from being in the top four, this makes it easy to see why Ogden has raised the question about Palmer possibly wanting to play in a better side that can offer him Champions League football.

Taking all of that on board, with the benefit of hindsight, it could be said that City should have asked for more money when they sold Palmer.
