Report: Hülkenberg close to signing for Sauber which will become Audi

Nico Hülkenberg is set to leave Haas for the Sauber Formula One team which will became a works team of German car makers Audi in 2026, the Sport1 portal reported on Wednesday.

The report said that Hülkenberg has been offered a three-year contract 2025-2027 by Audi which will take over Sauber. It said that the deal was all but done and an official announcement could come before the end of May.

Once Audi take over the power unit is to be produced by them in Germany, and the chassis in Switzerland at Sauber.

Hülkenberg's contract at Haas ends at the end of the year. He reportedly wanted to leave the US team after the 2023 season but was not released.

Neither Sauber nor Audi wanted to comment on the report. The current Sauber divers are Finn Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, the first Chinese F1 driver.

Germany's Hülkenberg has competed in more than 200 grands prix but never made the podium.

Another potential Audi candidate is reportedly Carlos Sainz who has to leave Ferrari after the season for incoming seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko recently fuelled speculation when he said that they would be unable to compete with an offer Audi have made to the Spanish driver. Sport1 said that Sainz has been given until mid-May to decide.
