F1 reportedly looking into points for top 12 finishers

Formula One is reportedly looking into awarding the top 12 drivers of a grand prix with championship points from next year onwards instead of the top 10 as at the moment.

The Formula One Commission is said to be looking into the issue at a meeting later on Thursday. The commission includes all 10 teams, the F1 rights holders and the ruling body FIA.

The current system with points for 10 of the 20 drivers makes it very difficult for smaller teams to get into the points, with the top 10 often locked out by the two drivers of top sides Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin.

After five regular season races and one sprint seven drivers and three teams - Williams, Alpine and Kick Sauber - are on zero points. Haas have five points and Visa RB seven.

The constructors' standings determine how much prize money each team gets.

"I am not against. You can finish P11 or P20 and it is the same, so I can understand the frustration for this," Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur was quoted as saying by motorsport.com.

Visa RB's Laurent Mekies said he supports a change because "even the bottom five teams are large organisations now and it's very difficult to explain to the outside world, to our partners, and to our fans, that we battle for a P11 that actually grants zero points."

At the moment points are distributed in a 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 format. The new format would see the top seven remain the same and then continue 5-4-3-2-1.

Points for fastest race lap and in sprint races are not to change.
