Charlie Mulgrew’s verdict on Brendan Rodgers’ pre-penalty reaction to Celtic kit man at Hampden

Celtic’s penalty win against Aberdeen will go down as one of the best Scottish Cup semi-final’s at Hampden ever.

The drama of Celtic coming from behind only for Aberdeen to score late on in regulation time to force the game to extra time was in itself exciting for the neutral.

But for Celtic to take the lead and then concede again in the dying minutes of extra time to take the tie to penalties was something else.

We all know what happened with the penalties as Joe Hart became the centre of attention and we haven’t even mentioned the two VAR penalty shouts that also caused controversy.

It was an action-packed tie that is still being talked about. But there was one incident that was missed by the pundits but spotted by eagle-eyed Celtic fans.

Brendan Rodgers’ ‘brilliant’ reaction to Celtic kit man

As Brendan Rodgers was giving his Celtic players a pep-talk before the penalties, footage from the game posted by a fan showed kit man, Stevie Wright having a chat with Paulo Bernardo.

Rodgers unequivocally told Wright to move out of the way as the Celtic manager fumed at the intervention and former Celtic defender, Charlie Mulgrew, praised Rodgers for his actions.

Mulgrew said [Open Goal], “I thought it was brilliant from Rodgers. It showed a man who was in control of that situation.

“For me, I thought it was brilliant.”

I’ve got to say, I have no issue with what Rodgers did either. It was a moment in the game when he needed his players’ full attention and that is what he got.

And when Wright looks back at that moment, I am sure he will realise he got his timing wrong and will have spoken to Rodgers privately about it.
