Robinson hunts 'marquee result' as Buddies boss homes in on Gers scalp

Next up for Rangers in the league is St Mirren with Philippe Clement getting the chance to go top of the Premiership, albeit for maybe only a matter of hours.

The manager got a reaction out of his players against Hearts and he will want to see a repeat from his squad again at the weekend.

Despite the recent slump, Buddies manager Stephen Robinson is fully aware of the threat that Rangers possess but aims to rock the boat in the title race.

Rangers being targeted by St Mirren boss for upset

St Mirren are overachieving this season and currently sit fifth with the chance to qualify for European football.

Winning points against either side of the Old Firm is not what clubs like St Mirren build their season on, however, when games are a free hit, as Rangers found out against Ross County and Dundee recently, they can sometimes be the most dangerous.

Robinson has overseen some big results in the past against Celtic and has run Rangers close too.

The former Motherwell manager is now looking to go one better and cause an upset as told to Sky Sports:

“Rangers have an abundance of talent and players who can win games on their own.

“I was at the semi-final on Sunday and they have quality in all areas of the pitch.

“We have shown in stages we can match that and it’s about what we can do defensively – we have to be secure but when we land on the ball be brave and take the game to Rangers.

“We are at home, we have a very good record there and it will be a full house. We are looking forward to it. We will take this game in isolation, try and put a performance on and try to get a result.

“We have got close but we’ve not quite had that marquee result this season that perhaps we had last year against Celtic.”

The template has been set to trouble Rangers

There seems to be a changing of tactics from Scottish Premiership managers in recent seasons.

Some still put 10 men behind the ball but Robinson is one of a few who is more agressive.

He doesn’t set his team up to press all the time but varies between pressing and sitting in.

Given the relatively small size of his budget, to be finishing the season above Hibernian and Aberdeen is a huge achievement and it should only be a matter of time before he gets a chance at a “bigger” club.

There’s no doubt that St Mirren will have a go.

They’ll look to target Rangers in transition, either by pressing quickly or by springing traps and looking to counter-attack when they win the ball higher up and closer to goal.

An early goal usually helps but so too is patience and not letting the game become a basketball match.

Philippe Clement will have a week to prepare his side knowing that anything other than a Rangers team firing on all cylinders could signal the end of the title race.
