New format and date for Billie Jean King Cup Finals

The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals will be played in a new format and later than in past years in Seville, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Thursday.

The ITF said that the 12-team finals are set for November 12-20, a week later than previously, and only feature knock-out ties, with the group stage abolished.

The changes are due to "an extended WTA calendar and, based on feedback from players, captains, fans and broadcasters," the WTA said.

The four seeded teams in the April 30 draw will have a bye into the quarter-finals, with the remaining four slots determined between the other eight sides in four first-round ties.

Title holders Canada, runners-up Italy, hosts Spain and wild card Czech Republic gained direct entry to the finals. The other eight - Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and United States - won qualifying ties.

The tournament will have a slight overlap with the men's Davis Cup Finals in nearby Malaga which take place November 19-24.
