Report: Ferrari prepare Adrian Newey offer with role outside F1 to quit Red Bull

Ferrari are now preparing an offer to convince Adrian Newey to quit Red Bull for the Scuderia with a great focus on a role beyond the Maranello outfit’s Formula 1 team.

The entire Grand Prix paddock are likely to fight it out to sign Newey after the design legend decided it is now time to start a new chapter. He has been in Milton Keynes ever since Red Bull joined Formula 1 in 2005. But their internal power struggle has convinced Newey to go.

Red Bull hold the cards over Newey’s future, though, as his contract runs until up the end of 2025. The team will also be loath to watch Formula 1’s greatest-ever car designer join a rival. Newey has won 12 constructors’ and 13 drivers’ titles with Red Bull, Williams and McLaren.

Ferrari want to make Adrian Newey a ‘super-consultant’ to quit Red Bull

Newey broke into F1 with March in 1988 before taking five constructors’ titles plus with four drivers’ titles at Williams from 1991 to 1996, one constructors’ title and two drivers’ titles at McLaren from 1997 to 2005 and six teams’ and seven drivers’ titles at Red Bull since 2005.

Now, the 65-year-old could add the Scuderia to his CV as Ferrari want to tempt Newey away from Red Bull. That is according to Corriere della Sera, which also reports that Aston Martin and Mercedes are in the mix to sign Newey, if F1’s design icon can break out of his contract.

Newey is a ‘very long-lasting dream’ for Ferrari, who have sought to lure the Stratford-upon-Avon native to Maranello for years. Now, his decision to leave Red Bull could make the dream a reality. But Ferrari will need Red Bull to forgo the non-compete terms in Newey’s contract.

Adrian Newey could retire from F1 as he wants to sail around the world

Ferrari are prepared to make Newey an enticing offer to thwart Aston Martin and Mercedes, as well. The Scuderia would happily give the Englishman a ‘super-consultant role’ that takes in their various projects. Newey would not be limited to only working on Ferrari’s F1 project.

The Maranello giant would also like Newey to work with their supercar division and possibly even on a sailing project. While the ‘super-consultant’ job title would also not oblige Newey to move to Italy permanently. Relocating to Maranello has previously put Newey off a move.

His chance to work on a sailing project might also prove decisive in Newey agreeing to leave Red Bull for Ferrari. Corriere della Sera adds that those close to him suggest Newey may yet retire – even partially – to focus on his other interests as Newey retains a keen desire to sail.

Newey commissioned British shipyard Oyster to build him a 90-foot sailing yacht, the Oyster 885, in November 2023. He also helped to design the sailboat with the aim of sailing around the world in it. So, Ferrari will hope an overarching role tempts Newey to postpone his plan.
