Gabby Agbonlahor issues verdict on why Celtic vs Rangers is the biggest rivalry in the country

Celtic and Rangers are once again embroiled in a tussle for the Scottish Premiership title that has raged on all campaign.

At one point, Celtic were eight points in front of their city rivals, as well as being five behind earlier this year in a season that has swung back and forth due to various circumstances.

Nevertheless, Brendan Rodgers has claimed two victories and one draw against our adversaries since returning north of the border. He has a chance to end the Scottish Premiership campaign unbeaten against Philippe Clement’s outfit by securing a result at Parkhead in a couple of weeks.

Of course, Celtic also face Rangers in the Scottish Cup final on May 25th, offering up a chance for Rodgers to complete a domestic double after some trying circumstances during his second spell north of the border.

Few derbies the world over compare to Glasgow’s version; however, the absence of away supporters in recent times has become a sticking point for some, as the fixture’s dynamic is undoubtedly altered with no visiting fans in attendance.

From 2024/25, Celtic will take an allocation at Ibrox totalling around 3,000 (5%), with the same being offered to Rangers fans at Parkhead, per Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.

Gabby Agbonlahor’s telling verdict on Celtic vs Rangers

Over the weekend, some of you may have seen a post from talkSPORT on social media platform X, where former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor ranked his top five most ferocious UK-wide rivalries.

Unsurprisingly, Celtic vs Rangers came out on top, followed by Aston Villa vs Birmingham, Liverpool vs Manchester United, West Ham vs Millwall, and lastly, Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur.

Granted, these discussions are entirely subjective, though Agbonlahor shed further light on why the Glasgow Derby figures so highly in his estimation, revealing that he has the fixture on his ‘bucket list’ to attend due to the ‘adrenaline’ that exists when both teams collide.

He explained [talkSPORT]: “Biggest derby is Rangers/Celtic. It is on my bucket list to go and see. When you watch it on the TV, you can feel the adrenaline watching the game.

“You can feel the atmosphere from the fans, you can see the two teams dislike each other. That is a big, big derby. The biggest in Britain by a mile, for me.”

The Glasgow Derby is a cut above the rest, and more importantly, Celtic fans have fond memories of the fixture in recent times, which is a testament to their backing of the side against our fiercest rivals.

Two instalments of the clash remain this campaign, and what a story it would be if the Bhoys could summon the strength to record two victories that would be crucial to our hopes of retaining the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
