Bayern's Goretzka 'excited' for Real clash, pleads for Germany chance

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka believes his side are on the verge of more greatness as they prepare for Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg at home to mighty Real Madrid.

The two teams played out a memorable semi-final in 2012, which Bayern edged on penalties, but the Spaniards have come out on top in their most recent last four clashes in 2014 and 2018.

Goretzka though was enthused by how Bayern played in their quarter-final against Arsenal, which belied the domestic form which has seen them lose out on the Bundesliga title for the first time in 12 seasons.

"I think something happened against Arsenal. You could feel it in the dressing room afterwards. This could be the start of something big," he told the club website.

"I believe in us. We've had a turbulent season. The Champions League is our last chance to win a trophy. We will prepare well and have a good match plan. I'm really excited for the game. I've never had the experience of Bayern against Real before. What could be better than a Champions League semi-final like this?"

Goretzka's roller-coaster season has included being dropped from the Germany squad because of coach Julian Nagelsmann's fears the 29-year-old would not accept a substitute role after the return of Toni Kroos from international retirement.

But Goretzka, who has 57 caps, has hit back: "I'm highly motivated, want to continue to impress with top performances like I managed recently and will take on any role Julian has in mind for me. We can achieve a lot together, I'm sure of that," he told Kicker magazine.
