'Tremendous potential': Local media hail loanee from Wolves, but note one thing which may concern Gary O'Neil

A Spanish media outlet was left impressed by Yerson Mosquera following his latest performance for Villarreal, but picked out thing that may slightly concern Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.

The central defender is currently on loan with the club and looking for a strong finish to the 2023/24 season.

Mosquera spent the whole of 2023 on loan at FC Cincinnati, which helped him get back on track after an injury-hit first season at Wolves.

Mosquera has so far made 13 appearances for Villarreal, and was named in the starting XI on Sunday against Rayo Vallecano, for the fifth straight league match.

The hope was that the 22-year-old could pick up where he left off at Cincinnati and play regular football, and Villarreal boss Marcelino has clearly taken a liking to him.

Mosquera was praised for his latest outing, but there is one thing that AS have noted about Mosquera which Gary O’Neil may need to address when he gets to work with him this summer…

Mosquera played a full game on Sunday and was actually on the scoresheet for the second time since completing his loan move.

Villarreal won 3-0, with Mosquera scoring the team’s second goal of the game. He met a corner and his powerful header was too hot for goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski to handle.

Alexander Sorloth, once of Crystal Palace, then added a third and his second of the game for Villarreal late on to wrap up the points.

Sofascore data indicates that Mosquera made an impressive six tackles in the game, which was the most of any player from either side. He also made five clearances which was again the most of any player in the game.

Furthermore, Mosquera won all 10 of the duels he contested in what was a monstrous defensive performance.

Spanish outlet AS were left impressed by Moquera’s display. But they have noted that there is one thing Mosquera that could use a little improvement.

They said of him: “He’s a beast. He scored a goal and showed strength at the back. He struggles with the ball at his feet, but he has tremendous potential.”

O’Neil will be keen to work on Mosquera’s ball-playing ability

It has been a really encouraging stint so far in Spain for Mosquera and he does appear to be another young Wolves player with huge potential.

He got really unlucky with the hamstring injury he sustained shortly after joining Wolves. But he’s back on track now and potentially, he could be an option for Wolves next season.

O’Neil has already spoken about Mosquera and he seems adamant the youngster will return to Wolves this summer. Mosquera is open to joining Villarreal permanently, but he may not get that wish.

O’Neil sees something in him, but he’ll probably be keen to improve his ball-playing ability. His accuracy against Vallecano was 82% (59/72) which isn’t too bad. But O’Neil is very keen to get Wolves playing out from the back with confidence, so he’ll surely be working closely with Mosquera on that in pre-season.
