Father of Norway's Ingebrigtsen brothers charged with abuse

The father of Norwegian athletics stars Jakob, Henrik and Filip Ingebrigtsen has been charged with abusing a family member, police announced on Monday, according to the NTB news agency.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen's lawyer said his client rejects the allegations. He "does not agree with the account of the events on which the charges are based."

Henrik (33), Filip (31) and Jakob (23) accused their father, who was their long-time coach, of being violent in their childhood in an opinion piece in the newspaper Verdens Gang last year.

"We grew up with a father who was very aggressive and controlling and used physical violence and threats as part of our upbringing," the brothers wrote at the time.

The police then began an investigation into the 58-year-old.

The youngest of the three brothers, Jakob, won gold in the 1,500 metres at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo and is a twice world champion in the 5,000 metres.

He and his brothers are among Norway's best-known athletes and will target more gold at the Paris Olympics in July and August.
