'There's a rivalry there'...Cantwell ready for battle as Gers star takes aim at Old Firm foe

Todd Cantwell arrived at Rangers last January and the former Premier League playmaker has had spells where he has shown the level he is capable of playing at.

When Philippe Clement first arrived at Ibrox, it looked like it might not be a relationship that could last, however, a return to his favoured number ten position saw the 25-year old rekindle his best form.

Rangers need Todd Cantwell at his best in the coming weeks and, speaking to Sky Sports, it’s clear how much he wants to win and has a message for an Old Firm sparring partner.

Todd Cantwell fired up for Rangers Old Firm challenge

The Light Blues number 13 failed to impress in the first half against St Mirren but was much improved in the second period.

He was unlucky to see a couple of efforts go wide as Rangers looked for a second goal.

Tom Lawrence seemed to carry on from where Cantwell left off too, having a goal bound effort cleared off the line.

Against Hearts, Cantwell was instrumental and it is that sort of display that Clement will need from him at Parkhead in a couple of weeks time where he will get to renew and old acquaintance.

The last time the two teams met, Todd Cantwell and Callum McGregor exchanged a few words with the former having the last laugh after coming off the bench.

The Celtic skipper pointed to the scoreboard telling Cantwell it was all over, we all know why happened next.

When asked about the incident on Sky Sports, he said:

“There’s a rivalry there, right?

“So, listen, there are things that are said on the pitch and things that are said off the pitch, you know as a player I think you should respect.

“I probably want to win just as much as he does, probably a little bit more to be honest because he’s been up here a long time.

“But listen, it’s a rivalry, it’s a competition, both teams want to win, both teams need to win and for me, it stops there, that’s all it is.”

Cantwell to let the football do the talking

Cantwell doesn’t seem the type of player to get bothered by someone like McGregor trying to get inside his head.

In fact, Cantwell comes across as the type of player who doesn’t let anything bother him.

With two more derbies this season, Cantwell will get the chance to prove that he is the best midfielder in the league.

As the man himself said the last time the two sides met, “We’ll see”.
