'I think': EFL pundit says Derby County only have one player who is actually 'top quality'

An EFL pundit has said Derby County only have one player with ‘top quality’.

Derby will be playing Championship football in August after a two-season absence from the division.

Paul Warne was the man tasked with guiding The Rams back to the second tier and he completed it at the second time of asking, finishing in second place, five points adrift of title-winners Portsmouth.

It’s certainly not been plain sailing for Warne and fans have been critical of him over the campaign but ultimately, he’s fulfilled the objective.

Attention now turns toward next season with many wondering how The Rams will fare under his stewardship.

Paul Warne’s Championship record doesn’t make for great reading

Warne has managed in three Championship seasons, all of which resulted in relegation with Rotherham United.

Admittedly, in his defence, he’s had to operate on one of the smallest budgets in the division, so it wasn’t an easy job by any means.

Notwithstanding that, the way he’s set Derby up defensively could fare well in the second tier, as they’ll be a tough side to break down.

Warne’s men conceded the fewest goals in League One last term and defensively, that’s probably the strongest area of the pitch personnel-wise.

Eiran Cashin has enjoyed a productive campaign at the heart of Derby’s defence and was subjected to interest from Premier League duo West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of the January transfer window, as per TEAMtalk.

The 2001-born defender has been hailed by Second Tier host Ryan Dilks, who believes he’s the only Derby player with ‘top quality’.

“The squad itself, it’s not one that is chock-full of quality it’s got to be said,” Dilks admitted.

“I mean I rate Eiran Cashin very highly, I think he’s a top-quality young defender.

“But aside from him I’d say the average quality of this squad isn’t great, so Derby will have to recruit well this summer.

“Their recruitment has been very mixed, to say the least while they’ve been in League One.”

As Dilks alluded to, a big summer awaits Warne and his recruitment staff, with many expected to depart at the end of their contracts.
