Miami offensive lineman Jonathan Denis entered the NCAA transfer portal. He started his career at Oregon before going to the Hurricanes.

Denis was recovering from injury last season and saw action in just one game against Temple. He made two starts out of five games played in 2022 for the Hurricanes.

While at Oregon, Denis spent two seasons under Mario Cristobal before following him to Miami. He didn’t see any action in 2020 and redshirted during the 2021 campaign.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Denis was a four-star recruit out of Homestead (Fla.) South Dade, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 54 overall prospect in the state, the No. 12 interior offensive lineman in the class and the No. 330 overall prospect in the class.

Denis followed Cristobal from Oregon to Miami but this time, he’ll look elsewhere to finish his college career.

That’s the price of doing business sometimes. Speaking of business, Miami spent a good amount on the Cristobal regime.

Miami credited Cristobal with over $20 million in total pay for the 2022 calendar year, according to Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today.

It was a massive amount of money that included nearly $8 million in his base pay. The rest of the money was “other reportable compensation,” according to the report.

Want to know how big this is for Cristobal? It’s the largest single year amount in history.

“The University of Miami (Fla.) paid football coach Mario Cristobal $22.7 million in 2022, including $7.7 million in base pay and $14.9 million in ‘other reportable compensation,’ according to a federal tax form released by the university Tuesday to USA TODAY sports,” Schrotenboer wrote.

“This is the largest-ever, single-year amount for an athletics department employee on a tax form by a private university, according to USA TODAY Sports research. The university did not go into further detail about why he was paid that much except that it paid ‘gross-up payments’ to Cristobal and others — payments that cover income taxes so that the recipient receives a set amount of pay.”
