Sheffield Wednesday will be free to sign 'magic' man if Birmingham City are relegated - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday are on the verge of achieving one of the greatest escapes in Championship history.

Sheffield Wednesday now go into their final game of the season with a three-point buffer to the relegation zone.

The Owls beat West Brom 3-0 last time out, doing so in front of a sold out Hillsborough crowd in their final home game of the season.

Danny Rohl and his side have amassed 50 points in the Championship this season and currently sit in 20th.

Plymouth are in 21st and on 48 points whilst Birmingham City are in 22nd and on 47 points.

Sheffield Wednesday could still be relegated from the Championship this season, though Plymouth would need to beat Hull City on the final day and Birmingham City would need to beat Norwich City.

That, combined with Wednesday losing at Sunderland.

Sheffield Wednesday fans will never tire of hearing Rohl’s name.

Even if, by what would now be something of a miracle on Birmingham City’s behalf, Wednesday are relegated on the final day, then it’ll still have been an incredible turnaround for the Owls.

To go winless after 13 games this season and then to put 50 points on the board is some achievement.

If the Owls stay up then it could be the start of something very special in S6; Rohl would surely stay and owner Dejphon Chansiri would surely do all he can to provide for Rohl and encourage him to stay for the long-term.

And if Sheffield Wednesday stay in the Championship, and Birmingham City are relegated, then the future of Ian Poveda may become clear.

Poveda remains sidelined, and may well have played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday.

If that’s the case then he’ll go down as one of the best loan players the club has ever had, with his energetic performances and overall attacking contribution having played a major part in the turnaround in the second half of this season.

As things stand, the 24-year-old out of contract at Leeds United in the summer and set to become a free agent; per reports, he earns £6.1k-a-week at Elland Road.

Earlier in the year, both Wednesday and Birmingham City were linked with a free summer swoop for the Colombian international, though if Birmingham City are relegated then they’re surely out of the race to sign Poveda.

Poveda has been described as a ‘magic’ player with Sheffield Wednesday.

Owls must take this stance on Ian Poveda this summer

Despite injuries, Poveda is someone who Rohl and co should do everything they can to bring back this summer.

Even if it’s just a one-year deal, bringing Poveda back to the club on a permanent basis is a signing that would not only improve the team, but would go down very well with the fans.

After a turbulent season, the Wednesday hierarchy must do everything they can to keep the fans on board and bringing Poveda back would certainly help towards that.

If he can use the summer to get fit, and if Rohl can use his somewhat sparingly next season (should he re-join, that is), then Poveda could enjoy a mostly-full season in the Championship after some tough years at Leeds United.

Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday kicks off at 12:30pm on Saturday, and it could see Poveda return to action.
