Leeds United could land significant upgrade on Illan Meslier for just £1m this summer - opinion

Leeds United are already starting to be linked with potential transfer targets ahead of the summer window.

Those in Leeds’ recruitment team behind-the-scenes will be putting the necessary plans in place for two possible eventualities at the end of this season.

Though automatic promotion now feels unlikely, there is still a chance Leeds will be back in the Premier League next season if they can pick themselves up to go again in the play-offs.

And there have already been a number of players mentioned as potential targets if Leeds do go up, including a sensational return for Kalvin Phillips.

However, there is also a possibility Leeds will be playing Championship football again next season and if that is the case, they will be shopping in a completely different market.

With £190 million of unpaid transfer instalments still hanging over them, it is also likely Leeds will have to sell a couple of key assets, with Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray among those already attracting interest.

Viktor Johansson would be major upgrade on Illan Meslier

One position that is in need of upgrading regardless of the division Leeds end up in is goalkeeper, with Illan Meslier again proving this season he just isn’t quite good enough.

Meslier had been playing with significantly more confidence earlier in the season, but for the second year in a row, has looked shaky at the business end of the season.

The 24-year-old was dropped for Leeds’ final four matches this time 12 months ago and while that won’t happen this season, it is worrying just how often Daniel Farke’s side concede whenever they face a shot on target. Leeds have shipped seven from 10 across their last two games.

Leeds have already been linked with the signing of a new goalkeeper ahead of the window opening with Rotherham United’s Viktor Johansson said to be a potential target regardless of promotion.

As per BBC Sport, Johansson is reportedly available for just £1 million after the Millers were relegated to League One, which is an absolute bargain for a player of his quality.

Playing in comfortably the worst side in the division, Johansson has stood out like a sore thumb, with new manager Steve Evans admitting he is deserving of a big move.

As per Sofa Score, Johansson makes comfortably the most saves per game in the Championship with 4.1. Being behind a significantly stronger back four could bring out the best of him.
