Huddersfield boss delivers Ipswich admission that Leeds fans will be encouraged by

Leeds United are still in the race for promotion from the Championship but they will be relying on help from elsewhere to beat Ipswich Town back to the Premier League.

The Whites currently sit second in the division, with a recent 4-0 defeat to QPR putting a huge dent in their promotion hopes and giving the advantage to their nearest rivals.

Kieran McKenna’s side are third, on the same amount of points as Leeds but with a worse goal difference.

However, the Tractor Boys have one game in hand this week. They travel first to the CBS Arena to face Coventry City on Tuesday before hosting Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Four points over those two matches will secure a long-awaited return to the top flight for Ipswich, regardless of the result The Whites manage against Southampton at Elland Road on the final day.

It means that for Leeds boss Daniel Farke, there is some reliance on help from elsewhere to get the promotion push over the line.

Huddersfield boss talks Ipswich clash

While the outcome of the Coventry clash remains to be seen, Leeds could be left relying on Huddersfield Town doing them a favour against Ipswich on the final day.

The Terriers are battling against relegation to the third tier, with the trap door now firmly open for the Yorkshire outfit.

A win, defeats for rivals and a 15-goal swing are what Huddersfield need to survive, which is increasingly unlikely.

However, despite that virtual relegation, Terriers boss Andre Breitenreiter has urged his team to keep battling when they face Ipswich on Saturday.

“We have to be professional for the last game and maybe decide the promotion battle,” the head coach told the press after Huddersfield’s draw with Birmingham.

“It’s our task to do our job. We want to finish the season with a good result and after we have hold conversations about individuals and about the future.

“The whole analysis will take place after the season. It is difficult to win with 15 goals next weekend. But we weren’t relegated today.”

It’s fighting talk that could gear the Terriers up for an upset that would work in favour of Leeds on the final day of the season.

Leeds United vs Southampton importance

With Leeds relying on matches elsewhere, the squad must do their best to head into the final match with clear minds.

The Whites host Southampton in a clash that could be important for more reasons than just automatic promotion.

Leeds, at the very least, will want to win the match to ensure they have done everything possible to land second place once the final whistle blows.

If Ipswich happen to do their job, then a victory over the Saints could come as a huge psychological advantage ahead of a potential Championship play-off final meeting.

There will be plenty of twists and turns still ahead in this promotion race, but Leeds will want to be the side coming out on top of it all.
