Wayne Rooney reunites with two Man Utd legends for first new role since Birmingham City sacking

Wayne Rooney is set to link up with two Manchester United legends after confirming his first new role since his sacking at Birmingham City in January.

The former Manchester United striker left DC United in 2023 and made his return to England to replace John Eustace as Birmingham City head coach.

However, Wayne Rooney endured a turbulent spell at the Championship club and his time at Birmingham City came to an end after only 83 days in charge.

The United legend left the St Andrew’s with a disappointing record at the club, with Rooney suffering nine defeats during his 15-match tenure at Birmingham City.

Rooney had hinted that a potential return to management could be on the table in the future if the right opportunity presented itself to him.

The 38-year-old former DC United and Birmingham City boss even broke his silence after it emerged that he had received an offer to cross over into the world of boxing.

Man Utd legend Rooney secures new role

Following his exit from Birmingham City, Wayne Rooney has actively been taking part in punditry and was part of BBC Sport’s FA Cup coverage in February.

The ex-Red Devils skipper provided analysis during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at City Ground in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Rooney has also been part of the matchday coverage for TNT Sports and took up punditry duties for United’s 2-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford in March.

The former Derby County manager has now revealed that he will link up again with fellow United legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville in his new role.

Rooney was on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show in February alongside Roy Keane and Gary Neville, with the former United star opening up about his life.

The former United and England captain has now confirmed that he will appear more regularly on The Overlap in a new role.

“I’m excited to announce that I will be joining my good mate [Gary Neville] and the team at [The Overlap] to appear on the channel across some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast,” Rooney wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“I can’t wait to get started – head over and subscribe now!”

Rooney takes his next step forward

A move towards working in the media could turn out to be a smart decision for Rooney, who has impressed at times during his punditry.

It remains unclear how long The Overlap stint will last for Rooney, but it’ll provide the United legend with more time to look for the right managerial role.

The former United and Everton striker has been tipped for a punditry role as part of the BBC’s coverage for Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.

The Overlap could prove to be a fruitful opportunity for Rooney to refine his on-screen personality before a potential punditry role for the Euros.
