'I'm telling you...': BBC pundit delivers clear verdict on Danny Rohl future at Sheffield Wednesday

Journalist Rob Staton has given his verdict on the future of Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday.

Rohl may well pull off one of the greatest escapes in Football League history if he manages to keep Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

And after a 3-0 win over West Brom last time out, it’s starting to look more likely than not that the Owls stay in the second tier.

It comes after Rohl took charge in October when Wednesday were winless in the league following the torrid tenure of Xisco Munoz.

Fast forward to now and the Owls have 50 points on the board, with a trip to Sunderland ending their season next weekend.

Rohl has admirers in the Championship.

Earlier in the year, it was revealed that Sunderland had shortlisted Rohl ahead of the summer, with the Black Cats set to hire a new manager.

Rohl would later respond to the Sunderland rumours, saying:

“What can you say? I can say that at the moment I am very happy here at Sheffield Wednesday. I enjoy the club and the supporters. I know how strong the relationship is and this is a key point for me as well. I have a good group here around me and I know what I want to do here. I know what we have to do in the summer to make a step forward.”

More recently, Rohl was quizzed on whether or not he’d spoken to owner Dejphon Chansiri regarding his future at the club to which Rohl simply replied ‘no’.

And now, speaking on The Monday Night Club with Mark Chapman on BBC Sounds, reporter and journalist Staton gave his verdict on Rohl’s future at Hillsborough.

He said:

“What he’s done is unbelievable. And the big challenge that Wednesday are going to have, is keeping hold of him… The chairman will sit down with him in the summer, and he’s [Rohl] going to give his demands. ‘This is what Sheffield Wednesday need to become a proper football club’, for the first time in a long time. If the chairman delivers that, then great. If he doesn’t; I’m telling you, this manager will go off and he’ll get a really good job. He’s destined for big things.”

Over the Dejphon Chansiri

As has seemingly been the case all along, whether or not Rohl stays is down to Chansiri.

Should Wednesday stay up then it looks like Chansiri will be given a fair chance to make some amends, and put in place some foundations for a much brighter Sheffield Wednesday in years to come.

And everything that Rohl has said about the club and its potential suggests that Rohl will stay, but like Staton says, there needs to be a huge input from Chansiri.

Chansiri may be willing to make changes to the facilities and put money into the transfer market, though whether he can do so remains the question.

Sheffield Wednesday are still afloat whilst teams like Reading have plummeted, so that might suggest there’s more money available than most think.

And with a number of players leaving this summer it’ll clear some valuable room in the wage bill too.

A huge summer and few years could be ahead for Sheffield Wednesday, though first they have a huge Championship clash against Sunderland coming up this weekend.

A point will keep the Owls in the Championship.
