‘Shouldn’t be starting’: Pundit says Ange Postecoglou should be leaving £25m Tottenham player on the bench now

Tottenham lost the north London derby 3-2 on Sunday, and, to be honest, the writing was on the wall before the game even started.

Indeed, Ange Postecoglou’s team selection raised a few eyebrows before the game.

Ben Davies had to start at left-back due to an injury to Destiny Udogie, but the midfield selection was baffling as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg got a rare start alongside Rodrigo Bentancur with the usual duo of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr left out.

Speaking on The Two Robbies Podcast, Robbie Earle has been discussing Postecoglou’s team selection here, and he’s been quick to question the selection of Rodrigo Bentancur, claiming that he’s a player who shouldn’t be starting these sorts of games for Tottenham.

Rodrigo Bentancur shouldn’t be starting

Earle spoke about the midfielder, claiming that he should be on the bench more often.

“I was surprised with Bentancur and Hojbjerg as a midfield two, they lacked athleticism in those areas. For me, Bentancur is a lovely footballer, but he is someone for after 60 or 65 minutes, he shouldn’t be starting games for me,” Earle said.

Rodrigo Bentancur hasn’t been at his best

It’s a real shame to hear this sort of thing said of Bentancur.

The Uruguayan was incredible for Tottenham when he first arrived for £25m, but, unfortunately, his recent performances have been below par.

He’s had a number of serious injuries as of late, and, sadly, that has affected his performance levels.

Luckily, according to Alasdair Gold, people within Tottenham believe that Bentancur can improve heading into next season, which is promising, but, of course, whether or not he does reach those levels again remains to be seen.

Fingers crossed Bissouma can step up in 2024/25 because he has been underwhelming as of late.
