Follow a scary crash at the Dover Motor Speedway that saw Amber Balcaen assisted out of her car and put on a stretcher, the driver has revealed the extent of the damage.
Balcaen suffered a non-displaced fracture in her left foot, the third metatarsal, according to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass. But doctors have cleared her to race ARCA at Kansas this weekend.
To do so, Balcaen will have a carbon fiber plate in her left shoe for support. She’ll have the shoe and plate available on Thursday to practice in a simulator session.
Balcaen also told Pockrass that she will not do much braking with the left foot, just operating of the clutch.
“I look at this as an opportunity to showcase my resilience and my strength,” Amber Balcaen said. “This is a track that I feel comfortable at. I feel good. … Definitely not 100% but we’re going to do what we can.”
Balcaen currently sits in fourth place in the ARCA Menards Series Standings for 2024, with 125 points. She has two top 10 finishes in four races so far this year.
Amber Balcaen wrecks at Dover
The wreck that injured Amber Balcaen occurred when another driver ran into trouble at the Dover Motor Speedway.
Initially Christian Rose hit the outside wall and began to catch fire. Balcaen was coming up to the inside and tried to avoid colliding with Rose coming off the wall.
However, a move to avoid Rose quickly turned into a spin, and Balcaen caught the track and veered down into the inside barrier head-first. She smashed into the wall and had to be quickly tended to.
Balcaen was eventually released from the care center and reported that she felt “fine.” She did have her left foot wrapped up and was set to get further evaluation on it.
Now, after those evaluations, Balcaen will try to suit up and make a go of it at Kansas.
