May 1 demonstrations get early start in Berlin's Friedrichshain

Demonstrators marched through the Berlin district of Friedrichshain on the eve of the May 1 Labour Day some throwing eggs, stones and fire crackers.

According to the police, around 2,800 people took part in the LGBTQ and feminist demonstration "Take back the night" on Tuesday.

A police spokeswoman was initially unable to say whether any arrests were made. On Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of people had marched peacefully for peace and social justice through the Berlin district of Wedding.

In the eastern Berlin district of Friedrichshain, officers had expected aggressive behaviour in the run-up to the march after unruly behaviour and attacks on the police in recent years.

The march only started moving after a considerable delay. However, the organizers ended the demonstration early - it initially remained unclear why. Late in the evening, many people were still standing on Warschauer Straße, dancing and singing "Take back the night."

The demonstration in Wedding under the slogan "For peace and social justice" went ahead as planned without any disruptions. The police estimated around 500 participants, while the organizers estimated the number of participants at around 800.

The police are deploying a large contingent to accompany numerous planned demonstrations around May 1. On Wednesday, around 5,500 police officers will be on the move throughout the city due to the many large demonstrations.
