Tokyo stocks open down on Wall St. fall, ahead of Fed meeting outcome

Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday, tracking an overnight decline on Wall Street, while investors adopted a wait-and-see attitude ahead of the outcome later in the day of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 168.33 points, or 0.44 percent, from Tuesday to 38,237.33. The broader Topix index was down 14.60 points, or 0.53 percent, at 2,728.57.

On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by oil and coal product, securities and mining issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 157.75-76 yen compared with 157.76-86 yen in New York and 156.85-87 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0666-0667 and 168.26-28 yen against $1.0661-0671 and 168.18-28 yen in New York and $1.0704-0706 and 167.90-94 yen in Tokyo late Tuesday afternoon.
