'Main candidate': Pundit thinks Manchester United will try to appoint 50-year-old manager if Erik ten Hag gets sacked

The future of Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is up in the air.

The Red Devils will miss out on Champions League football next season after what has been an underwhelming campaign this term.

Manchester United are currently sixth in the Premier League table, six points behind Tottenham even though the North Londoners have played a game less.

Ten Hag has come under a lot of criticism over the last few months, and there is a big chance he could be sacked at the end of this season.

If that happens, INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will have to look for a top-quality replacement to help take Manchester United back to where they were.

Jan Age Fjortoft has now revealed who he thinks could get the job if Ten Hag is shown the door.

Thomas Tuchel tipped as ‘main candidate’ to become Manchester United’s manager

Manchester United have been linked with a number of different managers over the last few months.

Erik ten Hag‘s future is far from certain, and with Sir Jim Ratcliffe calling the shots at Old Trafford now, it won’t be a surprise at all to see United move in a different direction.

The likes of Gary O’Neil, Graham Potter and even Gareth Southgate have been mentioned as contenders for the Manchester United job this summer – Gary Neville doesn’t want any of them.

A few big names have been mentioned too in recent weeks.

One of them is Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, who will be leaving the Allianz Arena once this season comes to a close.

Jan Age Fjortoft was asked on ESPN FC last night if he thinks Tuchel could get the Manchester United job this summer.

The pundit went as far as calling the German, who won the Champions League with Chelsea not too long ago, the ‘main candidate’ before mocking Ten Hag’s comments about United’s style of play.

He said: “Tuchel, I would say that I think he would be the main candidate if Ten Hag managed to leave the most entertaining team in England.”

Thomas Tuchel’s stats compared to Erik ten Hag’s after disappointing seasons for both

Both Thomas Tuchel and Erik ten Hag will admit that they haven’t had a great season.

The 50-year-old’s Bayern Munich side failed to win the Bundesliga title this season for the first time in over a decade.

Manchester United have had a terrible season too. They could end up dropping out of the top six if results don’t improve in the coming weeks.

Many of you may already know the answer to this, but who has had the worse season between Ten Hag and Tuchel?

Let’s see what the stats say!
