‘According to my information’: F1 journalist now shares why Adrian Newey was in Italy amid Ferrari links

Adrian Newey’s future is now one of the most fascinating storylines in Formula 1 as the legendary designer looks set to leave Red Bull sooner rather than later.

It’s believed that Newey has already submitted his resignation and an announcement could be made before the Miami Grand Prix.

Speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast, journalist Christian Menath has shared more details about the 65-year-old’s potential movements.

Every team on the grid would love to have Adrian Newey as part of their backroom staff ahead of major regulation changes coming in 2026.

Speculation about Newey’s next destination after Red Bull is only growing, especially after he was spotted in Italy on several occasions.

However, Menath has provided some information that might dishearten Ferrari fans.

Newey has been linked with a long-awaited move to the Scuderia after admitting he had come close to joining the team on several occasions in the past.

The thought of Adrian Newey leaving Red Bull a few months ago was unthinkable given his connection to the team over the past two decades.

Both Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen owe so much of their success to his work behind the scenes.

He understands Formula 1 regulations better than anyone on the grid and while Red Bull have plenty of talented members of staff, few can match Newey’s experience.

Newey looks set to leave Red Bull before the next regulations come in and he’s since been spotted in Italy fuelling speculation that a move to Ferrari is on the cards.

However, Newey has five options he could take once his exit from Red Bull is confirmed.

Ferrari are trying to appeal to Newey’s curiosities and want to offer him a similar role to the one he currently has at Red Bull.

That could seriously appeal especially as Newey is currently involved in the RB17 project away from Formula 1 right now.

Adrian Newey could give one F1 team a huge boost ahead of 2026 regulation change

Talking about Newey’s trip to Italy, Menath said: “There were the stories that he was seen in Bologna airport recently.

“Most of the people thought, OK he’s going to Ferrari but actually according to my information, he was driving around Mugello.

Asked if Ferrari is Newey’s most likely destination, Menath added: “I hope and think so, that would be a dream team.

“Ferrari, Lewis [Hamilton], Adrian Newey, I think that’s the missing part of the puzzle, isn’t it?”

Speaking on the On Track GP Podcast, driver Richard Bradley backed up Menath’s story about why Newey was in Italy with his Red Bull future hanging in the balance.

He admitted that Newey was on his flight from Heathrow to Bologna and explained that he was heading to Mugello to drive his classic cars.

The Formula 1 grid is likely to be shaken up in 2026 when many of the rules determining how the cars and power units are built will change.

Having Newey onside from next year could make a huge difference to how your team performs during the next era of Formula 1.

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll is well aware of this and has made a giant offer for Newey.

He’ll hope that will be enough to stop Newey from jumping on another plane to Italy with his F1 future in mind…
