'I wanted to clarify': Romano makes statement after £51m Liverpool target 'likes' post about Arne Slot

Liverpool are gearing up for another busy summer in the transfer window.

The Reds now have just two weeks and three games left under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp. With Arne Slot on the verge of being confirmed as his successor, all eyes are turning towards the transfer market.

There was more action than usual last year, as four new arrivals came in. With the squad still in need of upgrading in several areas, that looks like it may continue in 2024.

One key position that Liverpool will need to invest in is central defence. Ibrahima Konate is struggling at the moment and Joel Matip is set to leave. Another body is needed.

Thankfully, it has already been reported that the Reds will indeed look to add another defender to the ranks. One that has been heavily linked so far is Willian Pacho. And after Pacho was spotted engaging in some interesting social media activity, Fabrizio Romano has given an update on his situation.

What has happened with Willian Pacho

In this day and age, every little thing a player does is pored over and analysed. When it comes to social media, this rings more true than ever.

So, when Pacho ‘liked’ a post confirming an agreement between Liverpool, Slot and Feyenoord on Instagram, it sent Liverpool fans into a frenzy.

The post in question belonged to Romano, who as ever was across the big news.

But taking to his Daily Briefing this morning, the journalist claims that nothing should be read into Pacho’s decision to hit the like button on this particular post.

“I wanted to clarify something on Willian Pacho as some fans noticed he liked my Instagram post about Arne Slot,” Romano begins.

“I honestly wouldn’t judge social media activity like this when discussing transfers. Liverpool want to sign an important centre-back this summer, but the top target has not been decided yet and the manager will also be involved in the discussion.”

Will Liverpool sign Willian Pacho

With Liverpool looking for a new centre-back, Pacho has emerged as an early contender. Young, left-footed and with plenty of experience already, he ticks a lot of boxes.

However, as journalist Graeme Bailey exclusively told us on Tuesday, there are others still in the running for the Reds. Bailey mentions both Goncalo Inacio and Piero Hincapie as possible alternatives to Pacho.

All three of those players would cost Liverpool a fair bit. The Reds would reportedly have to pay around £51m to sign the Eintracht Frankfurt man, for example.

If they’re after a cheaper option, then maybe Southampton’s Armel Bella-Kotchap could come into play.

Pacho would look like a great choice, though. And although Romano is right to preach caution, it seems he may well be keen on the move.
