‘Massive’… Troy Deeney explains what really worries him about Liverpool appointing Arne Slot

Troy Deeney has shared his worries about Liverpool appointing Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Arne Slot is now looking likely to become the next Liverpool manager. The 45-year-old Dutchman will be taking on a monumental task trying to replace Jurgen Klopp.

However, he is experienced, and has a track record of getting the best out of his teams in his previous roles.

At AZ Alkmaar, if it wasn’t for Covid-19, he might have come very close to taking them to an unprecedented league title. At Feyenoord he succeeded and delivered a league title last season.

He’s done well in Europe and plays with a similar style to Klopp.

Although even that is not enough to convince the doubters. Including Troy Deeney, who has shared his worries about the Dutchman.

Troy Deeney on his worries about Arne Slot as Liverpool’s next manager

Speaking on talkSPORT, Deeney explained why he had some concerns about Liverpool’s appointment of Arne Slot.

The former Watford striker highlighted Slot’s lack of experience managing big players as the root of his concerns.

“Take Klopp aside and Liverpool is a massive institution,” Deeney said.

“It’s a proper club which we have all grown up watching and the fans demand success, so you need to come in and probably not tinker too much.

“Because if you go from Klopp’s red arrows approach to dominating the ball and really slow, what you would probably consider the Dutch philosophy of playing, you are probably going to lose the fans very, very quickly.

“He has got a massive 75% win ratio, which is huge for any level but my worry or fear for him is that when you make it about money everyone gets weird, but he has never managed a player who has been on more than £50,000-a-week.”

Why Deeney is wrong about Arne Slot

Even though Slot may not have experience of working with big players, he will have a massive backroom staff behind him to help him manage.

He will be appointed as head coach rather than manager as well. Which means Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards will be dealing with a lot of the players’ concerns rather than Slot.

He will just be able to focus on the football and trying to get the best out of the Liverpool squad.
