Baseball: Giants owner denies team plans move to new stadium

The president of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings on Wednesday denied any plans to move the Yomiuri Giants baseball team into a 50,000-seat stadium to be built as part of a development project his company is involved with.

The new stadium, a roofed multi-purpose venue that is slated to open in fiscal 2032, will be part of a redevelopment plan for Tokyo's old Tsukiji fish market.

Toshikazu Yamaguchi, who also serves as owner of the group's baseball franchise, told a press conference, "It's only natural to want to try to use it (the new stadium), but no plans have been made around the concept of changing the team's main stadium."

The redevelopment of the old fish market will be handled by an consortium that includes the Yomiuri Shimbun Group and Mitsui Fudosan Co.

The Giants have been tenants at central Tokyo's Tokyo Dome since it opened in 1988. Japan's first domed baseball stadium has staged a variety of international baseball tournaments, including the World Baseball Classic, alongside many other sporting events and concerts.

The new stadium is being envisioned as a venue for baseball, football, rugby and basketball, as well as for music events.

Yamaguchi touched on the idea of the stadium being used to host MLB and international games against Taiwan and South Korea.

"The new stadium would be a great venue for international games," he said.
