Israeli forces clear West Bank settlement, detain 30 settlers

Israeli security forces detained 30 settlers in clashes in the West Bank on Wednesday, a spokesman for Israeli Border Police told dpa.

Israeli troops and officials were clearing an illegal settlement near the city of Ramallah when dozens of Israeli settlers gathered at the site and tried to prevent the operation, Israeli media reported.

The settlement had been set up on private Palestinian land, local media said, quoting Israeli authorities in the West Bank.

Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967.

Around 700,000 Israeli settlers live in the territory alongside an estimated 3 million Palestinians.

The Israeli government distinguishes between settlements that were created with government authorization and illegal settlements.

Many Palestinians and international observers, on the other hand, see all Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal. In 2016, the UN Security Council described the settlements as a violation of international law.

According to the Israeli human rights organization Peace Now, more new Israeli housing units have been authorized in the West Bank since the current right-wing government took office at the end of 2022 than at any time since it began keeping records in 2012.
